Redwing

On the last day of 2008, the air is most definitely chilled by the cold front moving in from the east - it was still only minus one degrees Celsius at midday!

Suddenly, as if by magic, a flock of over twenty redwings have ascended into the trees near my flat in Bristol -coming down to demolish what's left of the ageing berries of a large Cotoneaster bush. The cold weather must have moved some of their larger relatives into the area too - instead of the normal one or two mistle thrushes there were five! They seem to enjoy the white, sticky berries of the misteltoe which is abundant in the lime trees around north west Bristol.

It's going to be another cold night tonight - it'll be interesting to see what birds New Year's Day has in store. A waxwing ot two - I can keep on dreaming!!
